The Carpentries: Introducing The Carpentries Director of Community, Alycia Crall
The Carpentries is excited to welcome their new Director of Community, Alycia Crall. Alycia has extensive experience serving diverse communities. Most recently, she was at the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON, an organization that collects and provides environmental data to advance the field of ecology) where she led engagement activities. Since 2019, she also served as Community Manager for the Environmental Data Science Inclusion Network. During her past work she had the opportunity to interact with team members and volunteers from The Carpentries and looks forward to fully engaging in her new role. She says that new community resources and programs are in the works.
Immigrants Rising: Guide for Undocumented Individuals Traveling in the U.S.
With travel becoming a part of our lives again, Immigrants Rising has provided a guide meant to ease stress for undocumented people traveling within the United States. The guide addresses requirements, rights, and precautions to take for airline travel, ground travel by public transportation, and ground travel by driving, as well as protocol for traveling to U.S. territories for undocumented travelers with temporary protection. There are also lists of frequently asked questions for each of the travel types.
The Council for Global Equality: Empires & Enemies – What’s Happening in Cuba, Honduras, and Haiti?
What do Cuba, Honduras, and Haiti have in common? They are all nations currently confronted with the strife of civil unrest and escalating situations. They are also all crying for freedom. The Council for Global Equality is hosting a webinar on Friday, June 30, at 11 am PT, to educate listeners on how to address these situations in solidarity. The webinar will feature firsthand accounts told by black queer organizers, revolutionaries, and artists from each of the Countries.
Vision Zero Network: July 2021 National Roundtable Discussion
Did you know that the National Transportation and Safety Board doesn’t just investigate plane and train crashes? They are also slated to investigate serious automobile accidents. The latter doesn’t get as much attention, though, because despite the fact 40,000 are killed annually in everyday transportation, each death is viewed as a separate, unrelated accident, when the deaths are related because they are the result of the systems in place. The Vision Zero Network Roundtable focused on how to get safer systems in place. Those on the panel opine that the approach to solving the problem needs to be holistic; transportation safety departments need to partner with those in public health and social justice.

Janet Camerena
Community Initiatives Board of Directors Service: April 2016–present
Janet Camarena serves as the director of Transparency Initiatives for the Foundation Center, working to champion greater foundation transparency. A key part of her role is to provide leadership for Glasspockets.org, which she helped to found and build in 2010. Glasspockets provides a variety of tools and features designed to encourage philanthropic openness. It has been recognized by the Webby Awards and was also selected as one of the Top 100 websites by PC Magazine. Previously, she served as Director of the Foundation Center’s regional office in San Francisco for 15 years. She led a team of six professionals in delivering extensive outreach and capacity building services throughout the Western United States, planning and overseeing training for social sector audiences, carrying out donor development and cultivation, and producing live and online programming such as the popular Meet the Grantmakers and Philanthropy Chat podcast series.
As a first-generation American, whose family hails from Mexico, Janet recognizes the importance of access for all to information and educational services and has also played an important role in Foundation Center’s creation and delivery of culturally and linguistically competent resources on grant seeking. She was among 48 nonprofit leaders selected for the American Express Nonprofit Leadership Academy. She completed her undergraduate work at Mills College and received a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University. In addition to serving on the board of Community Initiatives, she also serves as a board member of the Alameda County Library Foundation.
