Matt Calles’ most enjoyed work involves helping projects to update and streamline their finance systems so they move forward efficiently, working from a solid foundation. He first heard about Community Initiatives through another member of the finance team and was happy to dive in and work within its internal finance systems.
As Accounting Supervisor, Matt works with both Community Initiatives’ administrative side and fiscally sponsored projects, helping them to streamline their practices and make sure they’re able to focus on their missions.
While this is his first time working for a nonprofit, he has consulted with nonprofit clients through his career and is familiar with their needs.
Matt holds a Bachelor of Science with Distinction Honors from California State University, Sonoma, and is certified with the Turnaround Management Association for bankruptcies. He is studying for his second attempt at receiving his CPA license as his first time was interrupted by his then workplace’s filing for corporate bankruptcy, which he handled, gaining valuable real world experience in finance.
Outside of work, Matt can be found enjoying a game of chess, trekking through the wilderness, working with his hands, and telling you all about wine as he looks to challenge the Sommelier Level II exam. His greatest achievement was building a 3 car and RV garage from the dirt up with his uncle, which took them two months to complete. Coupled with his experiences growing up in a small town south of Fresno, he claims with due authority that “pouring concrete for a summer in the Central Valley will let you know what career you want in life.”
