Jose Plascencia

Jose was drawn to Community Initiatives because we support an ecosystem of organizations whose work he believes in. Jose feels fortunate to be able to channel his passion for social enterprise at Community Initiatives by utilizing his expertise in business administration.

Jose is originally from Mexico, where he cultivated cultural pride and connection to his ancestors. Living in Los Angeles kept Jose connected to the communities where he grew up, and active in rebuilding the social fabric that is lost when moving to a new place, which Jose has felt invisible in. Jose’s family eventually settled in San Bernardino County, which allowed his family to have a sense of safety and educational opportunity. He feels a strong connection to all three places and refer to all of them as home.

Jose graduated from California State University, San Bernardino with a degree in business administration and a concentration in accounting, then moved to the Bay Area in 2009 because he wanted to be closer to what felt was a very progressive, politically active community.

Outside of work, Jose does solidarity work that supports the construction of the post-conflict educational, health, and economic infrastructure of indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico. He also tends to a fruit and vegetable garden while learning how to build self-sustaining home ecosystems. When not playing with dirt, he explores visual and performing arts for the power they have to connect us to our bodies to heal from trauma associated with the stigma of being bi-cultural and how that healing can be channeled to promote peace.
