Heidi Hernandez Gatty

Heidi Hernandez Gatty is a leading expert on fiscal sponsorship and nonprofit infrastructure. At Community Initiatives, she applies her years of experience as a thought partner who helps social change leaders manifest their vision into reality. Her eight years at Tides and work as the Director of Acceleration Services at Citizen Engagement Lab allowed her to support leaders in strategic planning, organizational and business development, event production, and community engagement.

Most recently, Heidi was the Principal at Small Brown Girl Consulting, a private practice that focused on issues of art and social justice, economic justice, and civic participation. Through her practice, she helped develop the National Network of Fiscal Sponsors’ where she supported the steering committee, developed programs, and codified governance and revenue structures.

Her work with NNFS led to her expertise in network building and communities of practice.  She served as Senior Network Strategist for DataKind, where she developed and implemented a leadership structure for a volunteer chapter network of 13,000 data scientists across the globe.  She designed strategic frameworks that allowed chapter innovation to inform global practice, programmed and managed a Global Chapter Summit, and implemented a leadership structure that promoted sustainable volunteerism and leadership development.

Heidi grew up on stage and believes that artistic discipline is necessary to our economic and humanistic success. After attending UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film, and Television, she began her life as a professional stage manager, where she grew her deep-rooted work ethic, sense of responsibility, and creative problem solving. Heidi is also a Governing Board Member of the Walnut Creek School District.
